I can certainly forgive most Americans for not knowing that Liberia’s official language is English. But Donald Trump, obviously a legacy college graduate from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, knows neither economics nor English language history, nor US history, nor civics, nor much of anything else a well-nurtured and educated person would know.
But, to be fair, he has apparently earned a Doctorate in the Art of the Bamboozle under the tutelage of his father. This is clear enough since he has become the greatest con-man, swindler, and deceiver in American history. An absolute embarrassment to our nation, his rise and popularity highlight the dark consequences of our flawed Constitution that allows corporate and private-interest money to corrupt politics (an open invitation to self-serving politicians), and—irony of ironies—unchecked propaganda in the media (the darkest, destructive side of free speech).
Years ago, after researching the rise of deceptive speech in the Republican party and certain segments of the media for a novel, I concluded that any Democracy that allows deception in the media and private-interest money in politics will devolve into an authoritarian oligarchy. Good luck, America.
